The Tasmanian Craft Fair was conceived by the Rotary Club of Deloraine in 1980 in a quest to promote the beauty of the historic township of Deloraine in Tasmania and its surrounding pastoral countryside. The Fair was also a unique opportunity to raise funds for a range of new and existing community programs and charities.
In its infancy the Fair attracted 30 exhibitors, mainly from the local area, who gathered to showcase their cottage crafts at one central venue. The Fair now attracts more than 200 artisans and craftspeople from all over Tasmania who exhibit their wares at 11 different venues throughout Deloraine.
Attracting more than 30,000 visitors to the township each year, the event is now Australia's largest working craft fair. It has also become the main fund-raising vehicle for the Rotary Club of Deloraine, raising more than $600,000 since the inaugural event.
The Tasmanian Craft Fair now boasts over two hundred stalls and fifty varieties of quality art and craft, all of which are demonstrated during the four days of the fair. Last year's Fair included;
pottery, lead lighting, glass blowing, embroidery, woollen garments, silver and goldsmiths, oil paintings and water-colours, calligraphy, puppet and toy making, quilling, tatting, egg carving, spinning, silk screen painting, kite and kaleidoscope making, ceramics, leather work and woodworking, furniture making, black smithing, wrought iron work, basket weaving, whip making, spinning and weaving, candle wicking, lace making and patchwork.
